Pilgrimages were acts of devotion by both clerics and laymen. They would journey, often for hundreds of miles, to a church or monastery housing a religious relic. Pilgrims often stayed several days or weeks and brought trade to the town where the relic was located. Popular pilgrimage destinations were Paris, Orleans, Bourges, Lyons, Conques and Toulouse in France, and in Burgos, Leon and Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain.
Pilgrimages to Chartres were popular by the 11th century. Pilgrims would come to the cathedral to pray and see the famous relic, the [G 29 / Sancta Camisia]. The sick would be brought to the [G 10 / crypt] where they would be taken care of. There are many cathedral records of miracles occurring, such as the sick being healed whilst in the cathedral.
